Liberia's education system is based on a 3-6-3-3-4 structure beginning from early childhood education and ending at tertiary or advanced education. Managed by the Ministry of Education, the system has both public and private schools that receive assistance from NGOs and the international community. In spite of education being recognized to be important in the development of a nation, it still faces some systemic problems that undermine its quality and accessibility. The main issue is the lack of adequate infrastructure and materials. Majority of schools have poor conditions with no classrooms, textbooks, or sanitation facilities. Additionally, a large majority of teachers are not qualified or are poorly paid, especially in rural areas, leading to low morale and quality of teaching. These contribute to poor performance by pupils and high drop-out rates, especially among girls and children with disabilities.
