Clara began pretending that her milk wasn't flowing. “Can Beatrice help me breastfeed him?” she asked sweetly. “You know she has experience.” Clinton, thinking she was being considerate, agreed. Beatrice wept the first time she held the child. She felt a strong bond but told herself it was just emotion. She began breastfeeding the baby with joy. Clara would come in, collect the baby, and flaunt him on social media. People hailed her as a ‘new mother’ while the real mother wept in silence.
