Charlie Pellet became one of the most recognizable voices on the A-Division’s New Technology Trains during the early 2000s. On the (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), <6>, (7), <7>, and even the discontinued (9), his deep Bloomberg Radio-style voice was mainly used for the famous “Transfer is available to…” announcements heard on the R142 and R142A fleets. Railfans especially remember how clear and dramatic his transfer announcements sounded compared to the older onboard systems. According to subway enthusiast discussions and archives, Charlie also voiced many “stand clear of the closing doors please” announcements and miscellaneous automated messages across multiple NTT fleets. One lesser-known fact is that the Canarsie Line’s (L) train originally used Charlie Pellett for all transfer announcements when the R143 cars debuted in 2001. Before later voice changes and updated announcement packages, the early R143 program featured Charlie announcing transfers throughout the line, making the (L) one of the first B-Division services to heavily feature his voice. This era became iconic among NYC subway railfans and can still be heard in archived recordings and videos uploaded by Mr. Railfan, whose subway announcement collections preserve many of these original announcement packages from the early NTT years. The R143 rollout and transfer announcement discussions from 2001 are also documented in railfan archives from that period.
